Just a thought. People who were blogging last year have dropped out for various reasons: lack of time, lack of interest, lack of subjects, etc.
It seems like this time last year, blogging was the hottest thing. Now, the heat has seemed to pass and it's become passe. So is blogging dying or has the plateau been reached and now the downward slide to the actual level begun?
Just curious.

I work in the Mortgage business and am very used to a "cyclical business". It is always amazing how many shops will spring up during the "good times". These same shops are boarded up right now.
People by nature are after some new thing. I applaud people for trying new things, but not everyone maintains an interest or "love" for everything they try. It is kind of "faddish" for many people and yet many more keep doing it.
I for one enjoy it. Reading and writing. Maybe I won't always...but for now I do, and sometimes I feel like it gives me a "secret life"...maybe others don't need that....who knows?
I know that I don't blog or leave comments as much because we switched to dial-up, but I still read several blogs on a regular basis.
It does seem that the trend could be
slowing down.
I don't think it's dying per se. I think you're right that there was/is a peak in it about now but I don't see it dying off completely any time soon.
There are many bloggers out there that have been doing it for quite some time and will continue to do so. I think a lot of people got into thinking they could become "famous" and when they didn't get a following they quit. Others thought they could do it as a way to talk about things they don't normally share with others but when they got "found out" by family and friends, they couldn't continue with it the way they once had.
But it seems to me that if it were dying, places like MySpace and LiveJournal and Blogger would be dying off or going to premium accounts instead of free ones. At least for now, there's enough interest and new blogs being started that these places are thriving.
I created a blogspot blog in 2003, and posted once. Then I posted again in early 2005. Five months later - just over a year ago after a move from Alabama back to Arkansas - I started again and have continued since. I don't know how long I will, but like djg said, I enjoy it so as long as I do, I'll continue. I suspect there are a lot of people out there like that.
I've seen a lot of people's blogs sort of die - nothing new in months. It could be the lack of interest, lack of time, etc. Maybe they just have nothing to say anymore (although that doesn't stop me.) Not sure, but I think it will be around for a while.
I think your comment about leveling off may be on the mark.
I think it's leveling off too. But...hopefully blogging will live on. GO BLOGGERS!!!!!
That is a good question and I do not know the cultural trend. I have a feeling it is not though. It is a great way to express oneself in a way never available before.

I know a few moms who have been freaked out about the whole blogging thing and therefore deleted theirs. The thought being that strangers can just find your website and exploit your children. That's farfetched maybe, but I did remove all my pics recently.
I have truly enjoyed blogging - both the writing and the community. So I'm with Brandon - live on Bloggers!
Yeah, I think I agree with you all. Blogging is around for good, but the fad part of it is over.
in our methodist blogosphere we had a big boost of people last year start them with the intent of 'having something to say' and knowing people would read them. when they found out that no one read them or cared they stopped.. those who embrace the spirit of the software, as journaling, will most likely continue. guess those who can actually make money with theirs (however that is) will contiue as well.
I'm a lack-of-timer -- working full time, taking 9.5 hours at UAH, mom to 4 from age 3 to age 8 AND A HALF (can't leave off the half.) Wife to husband. I do have thoughts I'd love to share at times but just not the two hours to spend on writing them properly that I used to when I wasn't working OR in school. I miss the outlet, but my outlet right now is in hard work.
